ABOUT KUTOKA KAVAZINI (FROM THE ARCHIVES)

Kavazi (Kiswahili word for Archives) la Mwalimu Nyerere (Kavazi) or Nyerere Resource Centre (NRC) was a semi-autonomous institution under The Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH). It was launched in 2015 and wound-up in December 2019. Its establishment was preceded by a project supported by COSTECH which commissioned three researchers – Issa Shivji, Saida-Yahya Othman and Ngwanza Kamata to write a comprehensive biography of Mwalimu Nyerere, the founding father of Tanzania. In the proposal for the biography, there was a clause for establishment of a Resource Centre which would accommodate documents gathered through the research for the biography to make them publicly available to researchers and readers in general and that the Centre would be a place for debating development ideas in the light of Mwalimu Nyerere. The activities of Kavazi, including organizing public lectures and dialogues, seminars, training courses and publication of books were funded by Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung (RLS). The publications that were (re)produced by Kavazi are now made available here in four categories: Kutoka Kavazini; Nyerere Dialogue Lectures; Occasional Papers; and Special Publications.
